Starting in August, Romanians can repair their own mobile phones in the first service in Romania that allocates a space equipped with the necessary equipment and tools. The initiative aims to promote the right to repair, in accordance with European Directive 2024/1799, support the tech community and DIY enthusiasts, as well as significantly reduce electronic waste.
“Right to Repair” is an international movement that defends the right of consumers and independent service shops to repair, maintain and modify electronic products without restrictions imposed by manufacturers. This movement advocates for free access to original parts, specialized tools and diagnostic software, as well as for the publication of official technical manuals. It also encourages local repairs and the extension of the lifespan of devices.
“We believe in the right of every person to repair their own phone. By opening the Self Service Zone, we are not only offering this right, but we are doing it under the best conditions, in a dedicated space, with professional equipment and basic support. This initiative is part of our commitment to sustainability,” says Marian Abutoaiei, General Manager of GSM Zone.
By promoting repairs, the initiative contributes to a more sustainable environment, reducing pollution and resource consumption. At the same time, it supports the local economy by creating jobs and offering more affordable repair solutions. Last but not least, it offers consumers the real freedom to choose between repairing and replacing a product.
The initiator of this program is GSM Zone, in partnership with GSMnet and the GSM Romania Academy. The Self Service Zone is located in Iași, B-dul Tudor Vladimirescu no. 46, within the GZM Zone.
