Nearly two years after its launch, the Deposit-Return System (DRS) is solidifying its role in building a functional chain for the collection and sorting of beverage packaging in Romania, aimed at recycling. According to an analysis conducted by the ECOTECA Association, in partnership with RetuRO \u2014 the system\u2019s administrator \u2014 the recycling recovery rate for DRS packaging reached 74% in the first nine months of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quantities of materials \u2014 PET, glass, and aluminum \u2014 that entered recycling facilities increased from approximately 230,000 tons in 2024 to over 270,000 tons between January and September 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The analysis also shows that 94% of the materials sent to recyclers during January\u2013September 2025 have already been recycled. These results highlight a process that is becoming increasingly efficient \u2014 one built through the involvement of all stakeholders: consumers, retailers, producers, and recyclers \u2014 and that brings Romania closer to a circular economy based on environmental responsibility and resource reuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system\u2019s performance is supported by the ongoing development of the collection infrastructure within the Deposit-Return System. At present, there are over 6,600 Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) operating nationwide, installed and managed by retailers registered in the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the coming period, RetuRO aims to further strengthen the system through measures focused on expanding the number of retailers integrating the Deposit-Return System into their operations and setting up return points \u2014 particularly in rural areas.
