The project, developed together with ENGIE Building Solutions, part of ENGIE Romania, represents one of the most advanced energy efficiency solutions implemented in Romania’s brewing industry.

The project aims to significantly reduce energy consumption and increase production efficiency by modernizing equipment and installing high‑capacity heat pump systems designed to recover and reuse residual heat generated during industrial processes.

Implemented over nine months in 2025, the project was completed without disrupting ongoing production. The total investment amounts to approximately 12 million EUR, partially supported by non‑repayable funding through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The investment enables a fundamental transformation in the way thermal energy is generated and used at the Craiova and Ungheni breweries. The new installations allow the production of hot water, used directly in the pasteurization process — one of the most important and energy‑intensive stages in beer production. Through this integration, production processes become more efficient, more stable, and significantly less dependent on conventional energy sources.

The solution is estimated to deliver a reduction of more than 40% in total energy consumption and to avoid approximately 3,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, contributing significantly to HEINEKEN’s global Net Zero Production ambitions.

“This project reflects how we understand sustainability at HEINEKEN Romania — not as a separate objective, but as a core element of how we operate our business. By integrating energy‑recovery technologies directly into our production processes, we increase efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and strengthen the long‑term operational resilience of our breweries,” said Boris Miloushev, Managing Director, HEINEKEN Romania.

“We are proud to contribute to a decarbonization project for a reference client in Romania’s brewing industry. Through our expertise in energy‑efficiency solutions and low‑impact technologies, we support industrial companies in accelerating their transition to sustainable operations,” said Adina Susanu, General Manager, ENGIE Building Solutions.

HEINEKEN Romania has completed a major investment in modern technologies at its breweries in Craiova and Ungheni (Mureș County), accelerating the transition towards low-carbon production and optimized energy consumption.
