From a recycling perspective, not only are there technical challenges, but there is also a series of bottlenecks across the entire value chain. We must be honest, processing capacity is limited both regionally and nationally, as existing facilities are insufficient. When it comes to flexible packaging waste, which is often multi-layered, advanced technological solutions are needed for both sorting and recycling,” he explained.

Key statements:

• “Secondly, we must address the issue of collection flows. In the absence of an efficient collection system—particularly separate collection—materials often become contaminated. This reduces both their recyclability and their economic value.”

• “Thirdly, since we are discussing economic value, we must also talk about costs. In many cases, the cost of recycling these materials is significantly higher than the value of the recovered material, making the model unsustainable in the long term without effective financing mechanisms. This is where we at Green Pack step in, covering these gaps by providing customized separate collection solutions for each business segment across Romanian industries—retail, automotive, and others. We offer a complete collection infrastructure, including bins, containers, shredders, presses, and compactors, and we do not limit ourselves to collection alone.”

• “We are a one-stop-shop solution for waste management. We collect, sort, recover, and recycle. It is very important, especially considering new regulations, for partners, clients, and economic operators in Romania to secure a partner who can adapt and successfully respond to new challenges.”

• “These strict regulations are not necessarily a burden, but rather a mechanism for selecting players in the market. The difficulty of recycling complex materials becomes a competitive advantage when you invest in three essential directions:

Control over the value chain, end-to-end. We do not limit ourselves to collection—we integrate infrastructure, collection, sorting, and recovery into a sustainable ecosystem, including traceability and data.

Turning this complexity into consulting for our clients. For retailers and manufacturers, the biggest challenge is not collection, but redesigning packaging to be ready for recycling and incorporating recycled content. Especially considering that, under new EU regulations, by 2030, packaging below a certain recyclability threshold will no longer be allowed on the market.

Data and technology. With new regulations such as PPWR, data becomes the new ‘green currency.’ It is essential for market operators to invest in traceability, ESG reporting, and technology.”

• “At Green Pack, we invest heavily in advanced technology, including AI modules to optimize collection and improve sorting efficiency, as well as integrating our systems with those of our clients.”

• “It is very important for a client to find a partner that can help navigate the complexity of new regulations while ensuring full end-to-end traceability.”

• “What should companies do to be ready for 2030? First, they should begin redesigning packaging—moving from multi-layer to mono-material solutions, which are easier and more efficient to recycle. Second, incorporating recycled content into packaging. And very importantly, once again, choosing a partner capable of handling this complexity. This is exactly where we position ourselves—turning regulations into value for both us and our clients.”

Before materials reach recyclers, the collection stage plays a crucial role and remains one of the most important challenges in the recycling chain, Marius Porojan, Chief Commercial Officer at Green Pack said during Circular Economy Conference organized by The Diplomat-Bucharest and Sustainability Today. “Before recyclers come into play, collection is key.
