Bonapp and Carrefour are taking the fight against food waste beyond Bucharest. After saving more than 5 tonnes of food from being wasted and selling over 2,500 Surprise Bags during the first months of the project, the partnership is now expanding to four new cities: Ia\u0219i, Cluj-Napoca, Bra\u0219ov and Oradea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Through the Bonapp app, customers can purchase Surprise Bags containing between two and five products that are close to their expiry date, at discounts of up to two-thirds off the regular shelf price, regardless of the store format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process is simple: customers download the app, add a Surprise Bag from their nearest Carrefour store to the cart, and pay directly through the app. The products can then be collected from the store’s Click & Collect point or from specially designated pickup areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We want sustainable choices to be convenient and accessible, and the results of the pilot phase in Bucharest showed us that people are open to the surprise bag concept as long as the benefits are clear: quality products at significantly lower prices, rescued directly from their local store. Carrefour stores in Bra\u0219ov, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and Ia\u0219i are now available on the Bonapp app<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With this expansion, 20 Carrefour stores across Bra\u0219ov, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea and Ia\u0219i have been added to the Bonapp platform, covering Hypermarket, Market and Express formats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The range of Surprise Bags has also been expanded, with customers now able to choose from categories such as Butchery, BBQ, For Your Fridge, Snacks & Treats, Party, and Ready to Eat, subject to availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The selection varies depending on the store format, but the principle remains simple: the larger the store, the more options customers can choose from \u2014 ranging from four types of Surprise Bags in Express stores to six in hypermarkets. Each bag contains between two and five products at a significant discount.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the launch of the partnership, Carrefour customers have purchased more than 2,500 Surprise Bags, rescuing over 5,100 kilograms of food from being wasted and preventing 12.9 tonnes of CO\u2082 emissions. This is equivalent to driving approximately 32,000 kilometres by car, or making more than 35 round trips between Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca, one of the cities that has just joined the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
