The first is to consolidate our leadership in packaging extended producer responsibility. For us, leadership is not simply a question of growing from our current market share of approximately 21%; it means raising the standard for compliance, transparency, traceability and service across the market.

The second priority is preparing GreenPoint and our producer clients for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which applies from 12 August 2026. PPWR moves packaging sustainability beyond end-of-life compliance and into product design, recyclability, recycled content, reuse and market access. We are therefore adapting our systems, data architecture and advisory capabilities to support a much more granular and demanding compliance environment.

Our third priority is to accelerate digitalization, automation and the responsible use of AI agents. We are expanding the use of technology across compliance, operations, customer service and management reporting, while ensuring that human oversight, auditability and data governance remain central to every implementation.

These priorities directly influence investment decisions, technology roadmaps, supplier selection, workforce development and the services we build for clients. We assess decisions not only by their short-term financial return, but also by their contribution to compliance quality, environmental outcomes, resilience and long-term value creation.

Innovation with measurable environmental and social impact

Can you share some of the sustainability projects and initiatives that best demonstrate innovation within your organization? What challenge was it designed to address, and what measurable environmental and social impacts has it achieved?

One of our most important innovation projects is the intelligent automation of waste-traceability and compliance-document verification. Packaging EPR involves very large volumes of operational evidence, multiple document formats and a high need for accuracy. Manual processing was slow, repetitive and exposed the organization to avoidable errors and compliance risk.

Working with UiPath and Aggranda, we introduced document understanding, AI-supported validation and unattended software robots. The solution processes more than 100 document formats, including complex and handwritten documents. The program reduced document-processing time by 98% and eliminated approximately 10,000 hours of manual work per year. It also created a stronger audit trail and enabled much faster identification of inconsistencies. The project received a UiPath AI25 award.

The environmental value is that traceability becomes faster, more reliable and closer to real time. This strengthens the evidence that packaging waste has reached the appropriate recycling or recovery flows and helps reduce the risk of false or incomplete reporting. At the scale of our operations, this matters: in 2026, GreenPoint will manage producer responsibility for close to 300,000 tonnes of packaging place on the market and will support the recycling and recovery of approximately 200,000 tonnes for more than 800 producer clients.

The social impact is equally relevant. Automation has reduced repetitive work and overtime, improved employee satisfaction and released skilled colleagues for analysis, exception management and higher-value activities. In parallel, GreenPoint invested approximately RON 1.1 million in 2025 in information and awareness initiatives. Our approach to innovation therefore combines technology, environmental education and partnerships – because circularity requires both reliable systems and informed participation.

Integration into operations, governance and long-term value

How do you ensure that sustainability objectives are integrated into core business operations, governance, and long-term value creation rather than remaining standalone initiatives?

At GreenPoint, sustainability is not a separate department or a collection of CSR projects; it is the purpose and operating logic of the company. Our business model exists to help producers fulfil extended producer responsibility obligations and to finance the collection, recycling and recovery of packaging waste. The challenge is therefore not to add sustainability to the business, but to manage it with the same discipline as financial performance.

We translate sustainability priorities into annual objectives, budgets, operational controls and management indicators. We monitor volumes by material and source, recycling and recovery performance, supplier conformity, data quality, document-processing time, exceptions and auditability. Sustainability and compliance risks are considered in procurement, partner selection, commercial decisions and technology investments, and they are reviewed alongside financial and operational performance.

Governance is particularly important in an EPR system because value depends on trust between producers, producer responsibility organizations, municipalities, intercommunity development associations, collectors and recyclers. Strong due diligence, verifiable data and clear accountability protect both environmental outcomes and the long-term interests of our clients.

We also treat regulatory change as a strategic issue. Our preparation for PPWR is not a compliance exercise delegated to one team; it involves commercial, operational, technology, legal and management functions. This integrated approach helps GreenPoint convert regulatory change into better services, stronger client relationships and more resilient long-term growth.

Communication, trust and transparency

Effective communication is essential for driving engagement and accountability. How does your organization communicate sustainability performance and impact to stakeholders, and what approaches have proven most effective in building trust and transparency?

Trust in sustainability is built through consistency, evidence and openness. GreenPoint voluntarily publishes an annual sustainability report even though reporting has historically gone beyond our legal obligations. We are proud to be leading Romanian packaging EPR organization that has consistently taken this approach. The report brings together environmental, social and governance information and allows stakeholders to follow our progress over time.

We complement public reporting with direct, data-based communication tailored to each stakeholder group. Producer clients receive compliance information and operational reporting; suppliers and waste-management partners receive clear documentation and performance requirements; public authorities and local stakeholders are engaged through consultations and working meetings; and consumers are reached through awareness campaigns, educational content and partnerships.

The most effective communication is not the most promotional. It is communication that connects a metric to its meaning, explains the methodology behind it and is honest about system limitations. Stakeholders need to understand not only how many tonnes were managed, but also the quality of traceability, where collection and recycling gaps remain, and what needs to change across the value chain.

Digital channels, webinars, industry events and professional networks help us reach a wider audience, but dialogue remains essential. We listen to producers, municipalities, collectors, recyclers, employees and civil-society partners because no single actor can deliver circularity alone. Transparency creates accountability, while dialogue turns accountability into coordinated action.

Technology, digital solutions and artificial intelligence

What is the role of technology, digital solutions, and artificial intelligence in advancing your sustainability strategy, improving decision-making, or enhancing the measurement and management of sustainability performance?

Technology is now a core part of GreenPoint’s sustainability infrastructure. In a highly regulated sector, better environmental outcomes depend on the ability to process large volumes of information accurately, identify anomalies quickly and maintain a complete audit trail. Our automation program already supports document collection, data extraction, validation and exception management, improving both speed and control.

The next phase is the selective adoption of AI agents across compliance, customer service, supplier monitoring, management reporting and regulatory intelligence. We see strong potential for agents to track legislative changes, prepare structured analyses, identify unusual patterns, support scenario modelling and help teams respond faster to clients. We are also exploring how technology can support the data granularity required by PPWR, including recyclability information, fee modulation and new reporting requirements.

However, responsible implementation is essential. GreenPoint operates in an area where decisions can have legal, financial and environmental consequences. Our model is therefore human-in-the-loop: AI can classify, compare, prioritize and recommend, while accountable specialists validate material decisions and manage exceptions. Data governance, cybersecurity, explainability and auditability are as important as the algorithm itself.

The objective is not technology for its own sake. It is to build a more reliable EPR system, make better decisions earlier, reduce administrative burden and allow our people to focus on judgment, relationships and environmental performance.

Emerging trends and the next sustainability frontier

Looking ahead, what emerging sustainability trends, innovations, or technologies do you believe will have the greatest influence on organizations seeking to create meaningful environmental and social impact over the next few years?

I expect three major shifts. First, sustainability will move further from volume-based compliance to product-level circularity. Under PPWR and related EU policies, companies will increasingly need to demonstrate that products and packaging are designed for recyclability, contain recycled material where required, use resources efficiently and fit into viable collection and recycling systems. Eco-modulated EPR fees will make design choices more visible in the cost base.

Second, periodic reporting will evolve toward continuous, verifiable traceability. Digital product information, interoperable data, AI-supported controls and advanced analytics will make it possible to connect what is placed on the market with what is collected, sorted, recycled and reused. The organizations that invest early in data quality and governance will be better prepared than those that focus only on reporting outputs.

Third, sustainability performance will increasingly depend on collaboration across the entire value chain. Producers, EPR organizations, municipalities, collectors, sorters and recyclers will need shared standards, interoperable data and investment mechanisms that align responsibilities and incentives. The organizations that can turn fragmented relationships into coordinated systems will deliver the strongest environmental outcomes.

AI agents, robotics, optical sorting and more advanced recycling technologies will all contribute, but technology alone will not deliver circularity. The decisive innovation will be the ability to combine regulation, reliable data, physical infrastructure, economic incentives and consumer participation into one functioning system. That is where organizations can create environmental impact that is measurable, scalable and economically sustainable.

In the new editorial series of interviews, Sustainability in Action – Leaders’ Innovation Impact, Sustainability Today invites leaders in business to participate in an interview celebrating excellence in sustainability leadership across sectors.
