The Directive represents a fundamental shift in the standards companies must meet when communicating about sustainability. Environmental claims must now be specific, accurate and backed by verifiable evidence. Generic terms such as “green”, “eco” or “sustainable”, used without explanation or proof, fall under the definition of misleading commercial practices.

“When we launched Oxygen’s sustainability communication practice in 2023, we could already see this field becoming more complex. The new European rules change more than how companies talk about their environmental impact. They require a fundamentally different approach: sustainability claims must now be built on proof, not shaped around a story. Speaking Green is our contribution to that shift, a practical tool for companies and communication professionals in Romania. We believe more rigorous communication does not come at the expense of creativity. It builds something more valuable: credibility and trust.” – Irina Manole, Head of Sustainability & CSR, Oxygen

“The question I hear most often from companies in the Sustainable Romania Coalition, since EmpCo became part of the conversation, is a simple one: ‘Are we still allowed to talk about what we do?’ The answer is yes, but you need to be able to substantiate what you say. The risk is not just sanctions. It is also silence: companies doing genuinely good work deciding not to talk about it because they are afraid of getting it wrong. That’s where Speaking Green can make a real difference. It is written for the people who actually develop these messages every day, not just for lawyers. I’m glad to have contributed to it alongside Oxygen, and I hope it becomes a useful resource for marketing and communication teams across Romanian companies.” – Dragoş Tuţă Mihaylov, founder, Sustainability Embassy in Romania

„The new rules provide greater clarity for consumers while also strengthening the responsibility of economic operators for the claims they make. In the area of environmental claims, terms such as ‘durable’, ‘sustainable’, ‘repairable’ or ‘environmentally friendly’ cannot be separated from the reality they describe or used solely for commercial purposes. They must correspond to actual, verifiable characteristics of the product. Ultimately, this represents a natural development in consumer protection: recognising the importance of accurate information and the role it plays in enabling informed choices. Consumers who have access to reliable information are better placed to make responsible decisions, while economic operators must be prepared to substantiate, with due rigour, the claims they make about the products they place on the market.” – Csaba Lajos Békési, President, National Authority for Consumer Protection

Oxygen, in partnership with the Sustainability Embassy in Romania, has launched Speaking Green: A Practical Guide to Responsible Sustainability Communication, an initiative designed to help companies, brands and communication professionals understand and navigate the new European regulatory requirements on environmental and social claims.
