Nuclearelectrica joined The Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge, launched on December 5th at COP28 – UN Climate Change Conference, in an event held as part of the COP28 Presidency Thematic Program, in Dubai.

Endorsed by 120 companies, headquartered in 25 countries, and active in over 140 nations worldwide, the Pledge commits industry to a goal of at least a tripling of nuclear capacity by 2050. The companies endorsing the Pledge are matching the ambition and pragmatism shown by the governments which joined the Nuclear Ministerial Declaration for Tripling Nuclear Capacity, on December 2nd.

Both the Ministerial Declaration and the Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge commit to the goal of tripling nuclear capacity by 2050. On December 2nd President Klaus Iohannis and Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, endorsed the Declaration of Tripling Nuclear Capacity, along with other 22 countries.

“Nuclear energy currently supports 20% of Romania’s energy needs and represents for Romania a strategic option to ensure decarbonation, energy stability, energy independence and strengthen the energy infrastructure of Romania with significant macroeconomic effects. In this sense, we are developing the nuclear energy program that will increase the nuclear energy production capacity in Romania by 133%, at the level of 2030/2031, by: extending the life of Unit 1 by another 30 years, given the benefits of nuclear power plants refurbishments – another 30 years of clean, reliable and affordable energy, developing the Units 3 and 4 Project, deployment of small modular reactors power plant, with multiple social – economic benefits and which can position Romania as a regional leader.

Our nuclear energy program can be a successful example for other countries willing to begin and expand their nuclear energy program. We are happy to join the Industry Pledge, share our expertise and inspire other countries as well.” – Cosmin Ghita, CEO Nuclearelectrica.

Since 2000, nuclear generation has supplied, on average, 2500 TWh of electricity each year. Worldwide, nuclear reactors now supply around 10% of the world’s electricity, and around one-quarter of all clean, low-carbon electricity in the world. But with electricity demand expected to increase, nuclear needs to grow faster, and this is possible only with a strong commitment and cooperation from governments and industry players.
