OMV Petrom continues the “Romania plants for tomorrow” project. 25 urban forests in 14 cities are planned to be planted in 2024. At the same time, planting activities will continue in areas in need of intervention, both in urban and rural areas. In total, it is estimated that more than 560,000 saplings will be planted with the help of partner associations and volunteers. The budget for this year is 3.2 million euros.
Christina Verchere, CEO OMV Petrom: “I would like to thank all those who have joined the project ‘Romania plants for tomorrow’, our partner associations and volunteers. Together, we are getting closer to our goal of planting 1 million trees in cities between 2023 and 2025, to create or extend much-needed green spaces in these communities. This project benefits from the experience gained over time by ‘Romania plants for tomorrow’ and proves that when we work together for a common goal, we can achieve impressive results”.
After the successful implementation of the urban forest concept in 2023, the project “Romania plants for tomorrow” will be extended to several localities in order to develop miniature urban forests. Such a miniature urban forest has the role of improving air quality, reducing noise, increasing biodiversity and reducing the greenhouse effect. This year, planting activities will take place in 14 cities, including Bucharest, Constanta, Ploiesti, Alexandria and Târgu Jiu. At the same time, planting will continue in the countryside, in areas that require intervention. The total number of saplings to be planted in urban and rural areas this year is estimated at over 560,000.
The reforestation activities are being carried out with the support of six NGOs well known for their contribution to the protection of the environment in Romania: Act for Tomorrow, Mai Mult Verde, Plantăm fapte bune in Romania, Pădurea Copiilor, Viitor Plus and the Văcărești Natural Park Association.
Launched in 2020, “Romania plants for tomorrow” is the largest privately funded tree planting initiative in Romania: almost EUR 12 million for the period 2020-2024. Since the beginning of the project, more than 2,800,000 saplings have been planted. More than 22,000 volunteers took part in 210 planting events across the country.
