DS Smith Paper Mill is committed to playing an active part in the development of the local community in Zărnești, paying close attention to local needs and priorities.

The company remains focused on education and biodiversity, continuing the Circular Economy Lessons held in the city’s elementary schools. Since the beginning of the current school year, over 300 pupils have benefited from this initiative, expanding their knowledge of circular economy principles, recycling, and papermaking.

In addition to the workshops conducted in schools, several hundred children from Brașov county visited the Paper Mill, experienced virtual tours, and learned more about how small decisions can lead to significant results in environmental protection. Similar actions will continue in April as part of the Green Week program.

Other significant initiatives receiving support from the Paper Mill include the National Olympiads hosted by the Brașov County School Inspectorate in 2024, which were attended by approximately 1,200 students and teachers from across the country. The company is also involved in the modernization of the Paediatric Emergency Room at “Dr. C.T. Sparchez Hospital” and is assisting the Motokron Racing Team Association in organizing the 6th edition of the Hard Enduro Piatra Craiului competition, European Phase.

Diana Ciuraru, HR Manager at DS Smith Paper Mill in Zărnești, said: “What we are doing now as a company is important, but how we shape the future matters even more. We are privileged to have such a solid partnership with the local community, and we will continue to support projects that can truly change people’s lives for the better in the long run. Our ambition is to help turn the city of Zărnești and the Brașov region into success stories recognized nationally, and each project is a step in this direction.”

The initiatives fit with DS Smith’s corporate sustainability strategy called ‘Now & Next’, which outlines ambitious targets for 2030 and beyond – one of them being ‘100% of sites engaged in community activities each year’.
