Xiaomi unveiled its sixth report on the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles in the company’s activities. The document describes the progress that Xiaomi and its subsidiaries have made in the field of ESG implementation, management and strategy in 2023. This extensive report is divided into 4 main sections: Technology for a Better Life, Zero Carbon Philosophy, Shared Success for partners and Governance and compliance.

    Technology for a better life

Under the mission of enabling “everyone to enjoy a better life through innovative technology”, Xiaomi confirms its dedication to making technology accessible and inclusive for all. In 2023, an innovation in this regard included glasses with AI identification, presented by Xiaomi engineers at the Group’s fourth Hackathon technology competition. With ambient sound detection technology and intelligent gesture interaction technology, these glasses help disabled users to go about their daily lives efficiently.

Numerous accessibility features have been built into the company’s new operating system, Xiaomi HyperOS. These include ambient sound recognition, haptic feedback and an AI call assistant, underscoring Xiaomi’s commitment to inclusive and accessible technology.

    Zero carbon emissions philosophy

Adopting a zero-carbon philosophy, Xiaomi prioritizes low-carbon practices in all its operations and provides support to suppliers to adopt climate-friendly measures. The company’s commitment to carbon neutrality is highlighted with the introduction of its first White Paper on climate action at COP28 in Dubai in winter 2023, which outlined the philosophy and approach to zero carbon emissions. During the year, the company announced its commitment to 100% renewable electricity in its operations by 2035 and carbon neutrality plus 100% renewable energy in its own operations by 2040.

Its trade-in service has also been updated in select European markets, including Spain, France, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Italy and Poland, furthering its commitment to sustainable practices and responsible consumption.

    Common success for partners

Xiaomi is committed not only to the growth and well-being of its own employees, but also to ensuring transparency throughout its entire supply chain, while contributing to society and the global community.

With a firm focus on research and development, Xiaomi actively promotes the involvement of its employees in innovative research projects through the Xiaomi Foundation. Of note are the collaborations with over 150 universities and colleges that have led to revolutionary innovations such as the Xiaomi AIoT Box, which showcases the company’s ability to seamlessly integrate hardware and software to simulate various scenarios through the Mijia app.

    Governance and compliance

Meanwhile, Xiaomi Group continued to raise the standard of its ESG management system, with a firm belief that it is a key pillar in the company’s health and development. For this purpose, the board of directors is regularly informed about the progress made in this field.

The release of the 2023 Environmental, Social and Governance Integration Report reflects Xiaomi’s commitment to playing its part to improve the world we live in and progress in this regard. Through its efforts in innovative technology, a zero-carbon philosophy, a drive to develop the entire supply chain, and strict governance and compliance, the company has taken significant steps toward a sustainable future.
