The implementation of the circular economy model in Romania, a popular concept in the European Union (EU), is still fragile and not fully understood in Romania and not at all levels of stakeholders. However, there is proven local potential generated by specific projects in key areas of the Romanian economy.

In this sense, in order to highlight the evolution of the circular economy in Romania, The Diplomat-Bucharest organizes the second edition of the conference dedicated to the CIRCULAR ECONOMY, on March 31, 2022 in Bucharest, in a hybrid event with LIVE transmission from the JW. Marriott Bucharest Grand Hotel.

Laszlo Borbely, State Councillor, Department of Sustainable Development Government of Romania, said: “Romania can become a regional leader in the field of circular economy and we have the capacity to achieve this goal.

We have an advisory board of 34 experts with whom we have finalized 98 indicators by 2030. At this time we have finalized those action plans for 2030. It is up to all of us and the institutions involved to achieve these goals. I hope that next year’s Romanian budget will also include sustainable development objectives.

We need to complete the sustainable development strategy by the third quarter of 2022. There is a draft of the strategy that can be accessed, we are partners with the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Environment. We will finalize the Sustainability Code by the end of this year.

Senator Anca Dragu, Romanian Senate, said: “If we continue to use resources in the same way, we will need the resources of three planets until 2050. Society needs to change, we need to move to a more responsible approach in which we recycle resources this way so as to obtain maximum benefits from these resources.

Resources make the difference between a functioning economy and an economy affected by shocks. I am glad that there is this department for sustainable development within the Government.

At the parliamentary level we should see more seriousness regarding the implementation of sustainable development projects.“
