Saint-Gobain Romania launches the third edition of the Carbon Fund, a campaign that encourages employees to come up with their own ideas for reducing the carbon footprint. This campaign supports the Group’s commitment to reach the goal of zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
Based on the internal carbon price set by the Group for investments – 75 Euro/ ton of CO2, the Fund converts part of the carbon emissions into money. Thus, every employee is encouraged to propose the best initiatives, from small everyday actions to high-impact investments, wherever they work.
The main objective of the Carbon Fund is to accelerate the reduction of non-industrial CO2 emissions, i.e. those originating outside production processes.
“This year, the Carbon Fund is focusing on ideas that will help us reduce not only emissions from non-industrial processes, but also energy consumption at our workplaces. For the first time since its launch, a special award will be given to recognize the project with the greatest impact on energy savings. In a context marked by a growing energy crisis, this year’s edition responds to a double challenge – carbon neutrality and energy savings,” says Ovidiu Păscutiu, CEO of the Saint-Gobain Group in Romania.
In 2022, the Carbon Fund financed 12 flagship projects in the region, as well as dozens of other smaller projects, with the total budget amounting to over 4 million euros. The estimated annual emission reduction due to these 12 projects is 2,598 tons per year.
At the local level, Saint-Gobain Romania implemented several proposals, such as: replacing traditional light bulbs with LED installations in all Saint-Gobain locations in Romania and installing skylights on the roof of the Pietta Glass Working industrial hall at Vălenii de Munte. Also, the photovoltaic panels mounted on the ground at the Saint-Gobain Glass industrial site in Călărași will provide an important part of the glass factory’s electricity needs, avoiding over 2,400 tons of CO2 per year.
