Rompetrol and Ploiești City Hall have inaugurated the new primary school premises of the “I.L. Caragiale” National College, as part of a partnership that brings a historically significant building for the local community back into public use and transforms it into a modern educational facility.
The property, previously owned by Rompetrol Rafinare and used several decades ago as a nursery for the children of employees of the Vega Refinery, has been made available to the Municipality of Ploiești free of charge for a period of five years. Following this period, the building will be transferred into the municipality’s ownership.
The facility will accommodate 120 primary school students, helping to expand the city’s educational infrastructure and increase the capacity of local schools.
“Education is one of the most important investments a company can make in a community. We are pleased that a building which was once part of the history of the Vega Refinery is today regaining its role in supporting children and families in Ploiești. This project demonstrates that sustainable development means more than industrial investment – it also means investing in people, education and strong partnerships with local authorities, creating long-term value for the community,” said Sorin Graure, General Manager of Rompetrol Rafinare.
Ploiești City Hall carried out the renovation and adaptation works required to transform the building into an educational facility, with the municipality’s investment exceeding RON 1 million.
Rompetrol provided an additional investment of more than RON 700,000, covering the technical support required to meet fire safety standards and obtain the necessary permits, the modernization of the heating system, the refurbishment of the courtyard and green spaces, as well as the installation of an irrigation system.
The school has a built-up area of 718 square metres, four classrooms and a courtyard covering more than 2,200 square metres.
The project represents a concrete example of collaboration between the private sector and local authorities, with the shared objective of improving educational infrastructure and creating a modern, safe and welcoming environment for children in the Ploiești community.
