Sezamo collects 1.5 million packaging units and saves 11 tons of food in 2026

Online supermarket Sezamo has collected 1.5 million packaging units through Romania’s Deposit Return System (SGR) and saved more than 11 tons of food during the first months of 2026.

“On Earth Day, we are not talking about promises, but about results. At Sezamo, sustainability is not a separate initiative, but the way we operate every day. From delivery and packaging to reducing food waste and collaborating with local producers, every decision is designed to reduce environmental impact without complicating customer experience. We believe the future of retail is one where sustainability is not an added benefit, but an accessible standard for everyone,” said Michael Kaiser, Country Lead of Sezamo.

Sezamo’s fleet of more than 150 electric vehicles enables the delivery of multiple orders on a single optimized route, reducing emissions compared with individual trips to the supermarket.

Its supply chain is also designed to minimize environmental impact. More than 30% of Sezamo’s assortment comes from regional producers and suppliers, meaning a shorter journey from source to customer, fresher products, and lower transport-related emissions. At the same time, this model supports the growth of local producers and creates fairer business conditions for them.

Reducing food waste is another key pillar of the company’s strategy. By using technology for stock planning and order optimization, Sezamo says it manages to save 99.4% of the food it handles. The Save Food category complements this effort by offering customers 100% safe products with short shelf life at discounts of up to 70%, helping reduce waste at the consumer level as well.

At the same time, Sezamo’s packaging solutions are designed for reuse and recycling. Its reusable bags are made from 100% recycled bottles and can be used up to 25 times. Paper bags can be returned to couriers, collected, and reintroduced into the recycling loop to create new packaging, including within the company’s own Moddia PureCycle range.
