AQUILA reveals ESG report for 2024

    Published on

AQUILA, one of the largest players in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distribution sector from Romania and the region, announces the progress made in 2024 in implementing the 2022–2026 Sustainability Strategy, based on the three essential pillars: environment, social, and governance (ESG).

The company expanded the reporting of the “other indirect emissions” category (Scope 3) to all applicable categories and achieved two years earlier the target set for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Scope 1 and 2, recording a 13 percent decrease (location-based method) and 15 percent decrease (market-based method) compared to the 2021 reference year. The energy intensity reported per revenue decreased by 10 percent following the modernization of the fleet and equipment, optimization of spaces, and the use of renewable energy, which accounted for 54 percent of electricity consumption in 2024. In line with the objectives set in the decarbonization plan, AQUILA aims to ensure 80 percent of its electricity consumption from renewable sources by 2026.

Răzvan Bagherea, Organization and Human Resources Director, AQUILA: „Sustainability is not just a component of our strategy, but a firm direction for development. In a context where freight transport and logistics generate approximately 10 percent of global GHG emissions, our responsibility is clear. We set out to reduce the impact of our activities, and the progress made reflects the sustained efforts of the AQUILA teams. We have integrated ESG principles into everything we do – in investment decisions, in the way we manage our resources, and in the partnerships we build. Additionally, in 2024, AQUILA expanded the reporting area of indirect emissions, covering all relevant categories within Scope 3, according to the GHG Protocol.”

The investments in sustainability continued to be a priority in 2024, through the modernization and optimization of equipment in warehouses and offices, the installation of LED lighting systems, the modernization of the vehicle fleet with Euro 6-compliant vehicles, and the signing of contracts for the purchase of 100 percent renewable energy.

The digitalization process was accelerated, with the implementation of the “pick-by-light” system in 2,600 locations, which will be expanded to an additional 4,000 locations in 2025, alongside the complete automation of a warehouse.

In the supply chain, ESG criteria were integrated starting in 2023, and in 2024 the self-assessment score for suppliers was made up of 70 percent ESG and 30 percent quality components. The “AQUILA Code for Responsible Partnership” was launched, reaffirming the company’s commitment to ethics, human rights, and environmental protection.

At the organizational level, AQUILA registered an increase of over 10 percent in its workforce, with 96 percent of contracts being permanent. In 2024, over 11,800 hours of training were delivered to the employees, of which 40.27 percent are women and 5 percent are foreign employees. Gender equality and diversity are supported through the promotion of a fair working environment and equal opportunities for all employees.
