IKEA Romania and Sector 1 City Hall launch pilot project for furniture collection and donation

    Published on

IKEA Romania, in partnership with Sector 1 City Hall, has announced the launch of a pilot project aimed at collecting used furniture and donating it to disadvantaged communities. The collection campaign will run from February 1 to April 30, 2026, at the IKEA Băneasa store, with the goal of preventing the abandonment of old furniture by promoting reuse and extending the life cycle of furniture items.

The three-month program, implemented in collaboration with Sector 1 City Hall, primarily targets residents of Sector 1 but is open to anyone who wishes to drop off used furniture at IKEA Băneasa, with a limit of five items per person. Accepted items include assembled and functional furniture such as chairs, tables, sofas, wardrobes, and office furniture. These items will be donated to disadvantaged communities through partner NGOs.
Members of IKEA Family will receive a 25 RON physical voucher for each item donated, up to a maximum of five vouchers per person.

“Circular economy and waste management are an important part of how IKEA builds its sustainability strategy. Through our partnership with Sector 1 City Hall, we aim to help conserve resources and protect the environment by identifying solutions and opportunities to reuse used furniture and prevent it from becoming waste. This project gives old furniture a new life while also supporting people in need and helping improve conditions in disadvantaged communities. We hope that over the next three months as many residents of Sector 1 and beyond as possible will join us, so that together we can contribute to a better life for more people,” said Mihai Boian, Market Manager IKEA Băneasa.

In Sector 1, bulky waste, including old furniture, mattresses, and other large items, accounts for approximately 34% of total municipal waste, with around 300 tons collected annually. These figures highlight the importance of responsible management of used furniture and other bulky items in creating a cleaner and more sustainable city.

“This pilot project helps us manage bulky waste in Sector 1 more efficiently while also supporting vulnerable communities. The partnership with IKEA demonstrates how collaboration between local authorities and the private sector can generate real benefits for both people and the environment. It is an open invitation for residents to turn furniture they no longer need into tangible support for other members of the community,” said George Tuță, Mayor of Sector 1.
