IKEA and Sector 1 City Hall extend partnership: Bucharest residents can donate used furniture until year-end to support vulnerable communities

    Published on

IKEA Romania and the Sector 1 City Hall are continuing the pilot used furniture collection project launched earlier this year, after more than 400 furniture items were donated by Bucharest residents during the first three months and redirected to disadvantaged communities. The campaign will now be extended until the end of the year, allowing residents to continue dropping off furniture they no longer use at the specially designated area in the parking lot of the IKEA Băneasa store.

Most of the items collected so far include chairs, tables, and wardrobes. With the support of partner NGOs, many of these pieces have already reached dozens of families and community centers in Bucharest and the counties of Ilfov, Brașov, Teleorman, and Călărași, helping improve living conditions while also reducing waste.

“We are pleased to see that more people are choosing to give a second life to furniture they no longer use. For us, this is a concrete example of how circularity can become part of everyday life. At the same time, these first results of the campaign reflect the community’s willingness to support people facing difficulties. We thank everyone involved and continue to invite more NGOs to join us so that we can expand the impact of this initiative and contribute to a better life for as many people as possible,” said Mihai Boian, Market Manager of IKEA Băneasa.

The campaign mechanism remains unchanged: assembled and functional furniture items such as tables, chairs, sofas, wardrobes, or office furniture are accepted, with a limit of five items per person. IKEA Family members who donate items receive a physical voucher worth 25 RON for each donated object, up to a maximum of five vouchers per person. The vouchers can be used at IKEA Băneasa until January 31, 2027, with their value deducted from the total purchase amount. Presentation of an IKEA Family membership card is required to receive the vouchers.
