Lidl Romania introduces Anti-Waste Bag to help reduce food waste

    Published on

Lidl Romania has launched the Anti-Waste Bag, a new initiative aimed at reducing food waste by giving a second chance to fruit and vegetables that no longer meet the aesthetic standards for display on store shelves but remain high-quality and perfectly suitable for consumption.

Available in all Lidl stores across Romania at a fixed price of 5 RON, each Anti-Waste Bag contains approximately 2 kilograms of fruit and/or vegetables, offering customers a varied mix of products. For consumer safety, the bags will not contain allergenic products such as celery or parsnips.

The initiative builds on Lidl’s efforts over more than a decade to reduce food losses. These efforts include continuously optimising stock levels, accelerating sales by reducing the prices of products approaching their best-before dates, and donating products that have lost their commercial value to the Romanian Food Banks Network.

The Anti-Waste Bag is part of an initiative currently implemented in more than 20 countries where Lidl operates. In the 2025 financial year alone, the concept helped prevent more than 100,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables from going to waste.

“Every product we manage to save from waste represents an important success – for the value chain, the environment and climate protection. This is not only an operational efficiency measure that turns our sustainability goals into concrete actions, but also proof that reducing food waste and conserving resources depend on the choices we make together every day,” said Mihai Cazacu, Head of Corporate Communications at Lidl Romania.

The launch of the Anti-Waste Bag also complements Lidl Romania’s efforts to encourage customers to adopt more responsible consumption habits. In October 2024, the company launched the “Avoid Food Waste! Check Your Fridge Before Shopping” campaign. In April 2025, Lidl also made available a digital guide offering practical advice on how to organise the refrigerator efficiently, store food properly and reduce household food waste.
