Rompetrol to contribute to the regeneration of 20 hectares of forest over the next four years

    Published on

Rompetrol – KMG International will contribute to the afforestation of 20 hectares in Sibiu County over the next four years, in partnership with the “Plantăm fapte bune în România” (Planting Good Deeds in Romania) initiative. As part of this programme, approximately 40 employees from Group companies in Bucharest, Ploiești and Constanța took part in a tree-planting event in the Păltiniș area, in the Parâng–Cindrel Mountains.

The initiative supports the regeneration of a 6.2-hectare forest area through the planting of approximately 25,000 spruce, larch, pine and maple saplings. The project is being carried out in partnership with the EcoAssist Association, through the national “Plantăm fapte bune în România” initiative, and aims to restore forest vegetation, protect biodiversity and develop resilient ecosystems in the long term.

Under the guidance of forestry specialists, Rompetrol volunteers took part in the planting activities and learned about the essential stages of forest regeneration, from land preparation and the selection of species suited to local conditions to the maintenance and monitoring of plantations.

The selection of tree species is essential to the development of a healthy forest. In the Parâng–Cindrel Mountains, the use of spruce, larch, pine and sycamore maple helps restore forest vegetation and diversify the structure of future forest stands, in accordance with the characteristics of the land and the recommendations of specialists.

“Just like the centuries-old fir tree in the Cindrel Mountains, also known as the ‘Guardian of the Cibin River’, an impressive tree estimated to be between 300 and 500 years old, we hope that the forests planted today will become centuries-old forests in the years to come. What stands the test of time begins with people – in our case, volunteers. Under the direct guidance of forestry engineers from both Plantăm fapte bune în România and the Cindrel Forestry District, volunteers planted trees and transformed a piece of land into a future forest. This is how the future takes shape. We are all the driving force behind every project and the roots of every achievement,” Simona Camburu, Vice President and Co-founder of „Plantăm fapte bune în România”.

Through its commitment to contribute to the afforestation of 20 hectares in Sibiu County over the next four years, Rompetrol aims to support a long-term forest regeneration process that goes beyond one-off planting activities. The partnership reflects an approach based on continuity, collaboration with specialists and the active involvement of employees in projects that have a positive environmental impact.

Forests play an essential role in maintaining the balance of nature by capturing and storing carbon, reducing soil erosion, preserving biodiversity and regulating the water cycle. At the same time, the regeneration of forest areas helps increase ecosystems’ capacity to withstand climate change.

Forest regeneration does not end with the planting of saplings; it requires sustained long-term efforts. The project will continue through regular monitoring of the plantations, maintenance work and the replacement of saplings that fail to take root or survive, ensuring that the forest’s development is monitored and supported until it reaches maturity.
