In its Sustainability Report for the 2024 financial year, PENNY Romania presents the processes adopted and the results achieved in responsibly managing its environmental impact. The report outlines how the company conducts its operations, builds relationships with partners, addresses environmental effects, and contributes to the development of the communities in which it operates.
Through constant investments, long-term partnerships, and projects with tangible impact, PENNY supports responsible growth tailored to today’s societal needs. The 2024 Sustainability Report was prepared in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative 2021) and SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board) standards.
“For us, sustainability begins with the way we make business decisions. We aim to implement responsible processes that always benefit the communities we serve. Sustainability reporting provides the framework that allows us to analyze what we have done, what we can improve, and how we can continuously apply concrete measures that generate added value for everyone in our ecosystem — customers, partners, suppliers, and organizations,” said Dan Crișan, COO of PENNY Romania.
The report highlights PENNY Romania’s performance and progress across three strategic operational sustainability pillars: Sustainable Assortment; Energy, Climate and Resources; and Employees and Society. These are supported by a cross-functional pillar of Corporate Governance and Business, which sets the direction, rules, and responsible framework for the company’s operations.
“The results in this report show that sustainability is not a separate project, but part of our daily activity. Whether we are talking about energy consumption, the products we offer, or the communities we support, we focus on concrete and measurable actions that bring real benefits to the areas where we operate,” said Claudia Ivan, Head of Sustainability at PENNY Romania.
Corporate governance remains the foundation that guides responsible operations, based on clear rules, transparent processes, and measurable performance. In 2024, the company continued its sustainable expansion, reaching 416 stores nationwide after opening 40 new locations and investing €175 million in network and infrastructure development.
At the same time, PENNY maintained a business model that supports long-term partnerships, with 54% of merchandise suppliers having contractual relationships of more than five years with the company.
During 2024, PENNY continued developing a sustainable assortment focused on local sourcing and responsibility. 88% of the company’s spending went to local suppliers, and 70.8% of food products had regional Romanian origins. The TripluRO (3RO) program expanded to 870 products made with a main ingredient sourced from Romania, processed and packaged locally.
Through this assortment, PENNY aims to offer customers affordable products with clear origin and traceability, while supporting the local economy and long-term partnerships with Romanian producers. The company also expanded its range of organic and special-diet products, as well as items with FSC-certified packaging, contributing to more responsible resource use.
In the area of energy, climate, and resources, PENNY continued investing in energy efficiency and low-impact climate solutions in line with ISO 50001 standards. Compared to the 2019 baseline, the company reduced CO₂ emissions by 18% and lowered specific electricity consumption by 9%.
Green energy production reached 9,747 MWh through 108 photovoltaic panel systems, while 129 locations were equipped with electric vehicle charging stations. Additionally, 75 stores achieved BREEAM In-Use certification, confirming high standards of building efficiency and sustainability.
In 2024, PENNY retained its Top Employer certification in Romania and employed over 7,400 people. Professional development and internal mobility remained priorities, with 88% of management positions filled through internal promotions. Furthermore, 52% of managers had more than 10 years of tenure within the company. PENNY also invested over €3 million in community-focused initiatives.
The 2024 Sustainability Report reflects a comprehensive approach to sustainability.
