99% of Gen Z students say sustainability matters when choosing technology

    Published on

Sustainability and product longevity have become defining factors for Gen Z when choosing technology. According to new research commissioned by Lenovo among university students, 99% of respondents say sustainability matters when investing in a new device.

For a generation that is highly aware of environmental challenges, sustainability goes beyond the use of recycled materials in manufacturing. Instead, it increasingly means choosing devices built to last physically and technically, helping reduce the need for frequent replacement. As a result, students are looking for technology that delivers long-term durability alongside reliable performance throughout its lifecycle.

The research shows that a device that lasts a long time and stays fast is a key consideration for 37% of respondents. High-quality materials capable of withstanding the demands of everyday student life (lectures, libraries, public transport and cafés) are also among the top priorities for 36% of those surveyed.

What Gen Z expects from technology brands

Lenovo’s research highlights the key sustainability expectations students have when choosing technology:

    • Support and circularity: Repairability and long-term software support are priorities for 33% of respondents.
    • Eco-responsible materials: Devices made with recycled or lower-impact materials are important to 32% of students.
    • Sustainable packaging and responsible manufacturing: Fully recyclable packaging (30%) and socially and environmentally responsible manufacturing (29%) also play an important role in purchasing decisions.
